I've had a singular focus on a knitting project lately. To the point of an obsession really, I've just wanted to get the damn thing done and knit!
In fact, aside from the few hours at the beginning of last week to work on the hat (which I'm quite convinced was a momentary distraction from the obsessive knitting only because it was a small, quick knit), I spent 17 hours last week knitting! Definitely a new record for me (and quite possibly I've been overly generous in my knitting estimates).
What is the project that has captured my attention so? That would be the Bedouin Bag:
With all this obsessive knitting, I've had time to think about what makes a project (and particularly this one) a good candidate for biting a knitter with the obsessive bug:
- Knit in the round (easy repetition)
- Pattern repeats to break up monotony and incent progress ("I'll just knit to the next ridge!")
- Double-stranding of worsted weight yarn to eat up yarn quickly
- Minimal attention required for pattern makes it good for social and TV knitting
Of course now that the knitting is done, the challenge will be to maintain momentum and get the bag felted and lined and finished. In the meantime, I've moved on to a new project - this one from my goals list for 2013:
Starting this last night wasn't the best thing for my confidence as a knitter. It's fiddly and annoying knitting with fingering weight yarn on DPNs (I started with magic loop first) and the acrylic and metal needles aren't really making me feel any love so far either.
Which means it's off to track down some 4.0mm wooden DPNs for me. Although I may give it a shot on 4.5mm just to see as well. Can you tell I'm not really engaged in this one yet?
