The Basingstoke Big Knit

In addition to the overwhelming craziness of this month it's also a big month for me knitting-wise. And not because I'm actually making any progress on my projects (were that were the case!), but because there have been a lot of knit-y reasons for me to get out of the city.

It's the Basingstoke Big Knit!

My most recent trip took me out of London to Basingstoke where dear friends Catherine and Jenny had organised the Basingstoke Big Knit as part of festivities with World Wide Knit in Public Week (it used to be a day, now it's a whole week!).

Friendly Jenny was welcoming the knitters and putting them right to work!

Knitters from all around Basingstoke and farther afield came together in support of St. Michael's Hospice with the plan to knit squares for a blanket in a single day.

Lots of knitters gathered in Festival Place.

Many knitters make light work!

Many had also knit squares in advance of coming to the Big Knit, so there were lots on hand and it soon there were two people assembling the squares into blankets while others knit on!

Knit squares are crochet joined into strips for the blanket assembly.

Just look at that bucket o' squares ready to go!

It was a terrific day to spend some time knitting, meeting new folk, and helping such a worthy cause.

Catherine gets some knitting of her own in during a quieter moment.

All in all, the BBK had over 75 knitters participate and ended up with almost 400 squares! That's a good number of lap blankets for the hospice! Well done girls!

Next year I'll be sure to follow the pattern so that you get a proper square from me!

Quick update: Catherine has blogged about the event and has more pictures here. Enjoy!
